Rahway Valley Sewerage Authority operates a regional wastewater collection and treatment system that serves 11 communities in Central New Jersey. Every day, RVSA treats approximately 30 million gallons of wastewater to protect the public's health and environment. Our treatment plant offers a limited number of tours each month to show the general public how the water they use is cleaned and safely returned to the environment. Visitors see the various way pollutants are removed from wastewater replicating nature's own processes, but in a much-condensed time frame. Tour groups also may see how wastewater solids are processed so that they can be beneficially re-used, and how energy is recovered along the way to power RVSA's treatment plan.
Tours are free.
Tours are given during regular business hours, Monday through Friday, initiating between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.
Reservations must be made at least 2 weeks in advance, and are on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Tours are about 2.5 hours long, beginning with an orientation video and ending with a question-and-answer period.
The minimum age for our tour participants is sixth grade.
The minimum group size is 10 people; maximum is 30. Larger groups will be considered based on staff availability. There should be one teacher / chaperone for every 15 students.
Tour guides are the employees who operate and manage the plant. They provide a thorough, step-by-step explanation of the wastewater treatment process.
