Where Does It Go?

Did you ever wonder what happens when you flush your toilet or pour something down the drain?

Whenever wastewater leaves your home it doesn’t just “go away.” When you flush the toilet, take a shower, wash dishes or do laundry, the wastewater needs to be cleaned before it can be returned to the environment. When wastewater goes down the drain in your home, it travels through the sewer system to a treatment plant. The Rahway Valley Sewerage Authority (RVSA) operates a wastewater treatment plant that serves more than 250,000 residents and 3,500 industrial and commercial customers in 14 communities in central New Jersey.

You can learn more about the treatment process at the RVSA by clicking on the stations throughout this map.
